Last night was one of the premiere events of the Tobago Heritage Festival: the Ms. Heritage Personality.
This was THE beauty pagent of Tobago. There were 8 beautiful ladies featured, each from different parts or organizations around Tobago.
Now I might be the Island Connoisseur, but I am no Beauty Connoisseur so I couldn’t really compare it to the typical Beauty pageant. But, I can tell you this, there was way more that beauty on display last night.
The first part was the talent portion, where each contestant put on an impressive display of acting, singing through storytelling, dancing and a bit of comedy. Each themed towards and honouring a specific type of Tobagonian women “character”. Some example were the midwife, the washerwoman and the fisherwomen.
In the gown portion of the evening their dresses reflected those characters and each one was specifically crafted to tell that character’s story.
I have never in my life seen such beautifully crafted, creative and unique gowns before. They were obviously all hand made with so much love and passion, they were honesty more like works of art than dresses.
After the dresses came the first elimination, it was 8 down to 5 and onto the the question round.( Yes there was no bikini round, this pageant was seriously more about stories and personality rather than looks) .
The questions ranged from; “ How would you inspire the youth of today to take part in the Heritage Festival?” , to, “ How can we improve and hold onto our traditions for the future?”. All very much centred around the theme of preserving the past for the future.
Then after a second elimination round it was time for the last and final question and the Queen was crowned.
In all I rather really enjoyed the pagent, it was a wonderful event and evening that the festival’s directors should be so proud to have put on.
Congraduations again to the winner: Ms. Zobah Samuel who was crowned Ms. Heritage Personality 2014!!
